The coup continues.

Well, it's clearly not over, this rebellion of my belongings.

My computer arrived at work today, and since I wasn't working today at the office, I drove to pick it up so I would have a back-up plan if my old computer decides to stop working again before the translation is finished. I had my coins ready to stick in a meter, but no metered spots were available near my office. Then I saw there was a loading zone spot. I thought, huh, I am here to pick up something for 2 minutes, this is exactly what this spot is for! So I parked and ran in to get the computer and was back out super quickly. I was unlocking the passenger door to put the computer in, and my key broke off in the lock.

So. I had locked all the doors and the hatchback (I used to live in Chicago, after all!) and I only have one set of spare car keys which were back at home. And I was in a loading zone parking place. I started crying.

I go back to the office (in tears), and my colleague tried to unlock the door with a ruler and wire, but it didn't work so he said will make a note to stick in the wipers. I took a cab home to get the second set of keys. Thankfully, I got back with the keys before receiving a ticket. So at least there's that. And the fact that I knew exactly where the spares were.

Can you even get copies of car keys made? Will I have to change out the whole lock system to have a spare? Anyone know?

Sigh.

Now I am drinking a mint mocha coffee I got for Christmas, trying to calm down before diving into the translation.

And I don't plan on leaving the house again until tomorrow. Maybe next week will return to normal?

  1. Hey! I found your blog (I think from A Practical Wedding), and have been reading for a couple of weeks. I wanted to comment so that I don't feel like a creepy lurker :). Anyway, I just wanted to say, for what it's worth from a random New Yorker, that you seem like a very strong person, and things will get better. Also, it's totally true that all shit seems to break at the same time.

    1. fafner, I'm glad you introduced yourself; it's nice to "meet" you! Thank you for your encouragement... And yeah, why is it that everything breaks at once?? I think things might have calmed down over here, but I am hunkering down at home this weekend, just in case... :)

  2. Oh man, that's so frustrating! I would call the car dealership and ask them about the keys; if one broke off in the lock, that doesn't sound like something that you should be responsible for! I'm glad you were able to get your spares and that you didn't get a ticket!

    1. Well, the keys are really old... The car is almost 21 years old, so..... :)

  3. I've had copies of car keys made plenty of times - just went o a hardware store or a locksmith with a key machine.

And I understand what it's like when everything seems to break at once. been there - no fun!

    1. Hi Chris, I will try getting a copy made this week at Canadian Tire, which is where someone told me to go. Apparently (according to someone who works in a dealership), it depends on the car and model, as to whether just anyone can make copies. I hope mine is one that can have copies made easily...

My dad had the good idea of getting copies made then using the copies as my car keys and saving the originals to use if I ever need to make copies again.

  4. The simple act of getting your computer a backup lead to this incident? This is really disappointing. Good thing you have a colleague that helped you figure this out. Also, for not receiving a ticket. That’s a relief. How are you now, btw?
